Road Construction

The Road Construction research unit conducts research and development of focusing on:

  • The design of road constructions
  • Bearing capacity of roads
  • Deterioration of road constructions, including abrasion wear of pavements
  • Impact on environment (for example road dust and road dust emissions)
  • Alternative materials (for instance biomaterials)

The research is conducted based on outer and inner factors, where outer factors are:

  • Climate (temperature and moisture)
  • Load times
  • Traffic loads
  • Traffic intensity
  • Traffic side distribution
  • Tyre usage (studded versus non-studded)

Inner factors include:

  • Air voids content
  • Aggregate content (size, distribution, type)
  • Binder rheology (bitumen)
  • Compaction of construction layers
  • Layer thickness

The Road Construction research unit conducts research and development on:

  • bearing capacity and deterioration of porous pavements
  • material characteristics of frictional materials
  • analytical pavement design
  • management and maintenance of roads.
